The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) is organizing a workshop to empower disadvantaged communities through Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The “Telecentre Leaders Forum” workshop will be held on 15 and 16 July 2009 at the Jordanian Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, Amman.

The main objective of this project is to empower disadvantaged communities by transforming selected ICT access points/telecentres into networked knowledge hubs. Project activities that have already taken place include the review and assessment of ICT access points; development of a detailed implementation plan; selection of ICT access points and planning project activities; preparation of regional and global strategies on the transformation and networking process; and preliminary design for the creation and implementation of a knowledge network portal.

This workshop, entitled Telecentre Leaders Forum, is jointly organized by ESCWA, Telecentre.org, World Links Arab, the Egypt ICT Trust Fund and the Jordanian Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

ESCWA is organizing this workshop within the framework of the Development Account project on "Knowledge networks through ICT access points for disadvantaged communities," which is being carried out by the United Nations Regional Commissions with ESCWA as the lead organization in its implementation.
