ESCWA Marks World Social Justice Day

Political, diplomatic, media, cultural and specialists in economic and social development figure were gathered by ESCWA on 20 February 2015 to mark the World Social Justice Day at the United Nations House, Beirut.
The audience listened to statements delivered by Lebanese Minister of Social Affairs Rashid Derbas, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCWA Rima Khalaf, Under-Secretary-General and UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag and Executive Director of the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND) Ziad Abdel Samad. The message of U.N. Secretary General Ban ki-moon was delivered by Kaag.
Presented by Zahi Wehbe, a media figure and poet, this year’s event was spearheaded by the performance of by renowned singer Carole Samaha who impressed the audience by her song “The Great Orient” (“Al Sharq Al Azeem”).
The program also included “Scheherazade’s Diaries”, a short movie by actress and director Zeina Daccache that highlights the suffering of specific marginalized communities in the Lebanese society followed by an open discussion on the movie’s key messages, and selected graffiti works that focus on social justice, by Yazan Halwani (Lebanon), Murad Subay (Yemen) and EgyNeMo (Egypt).
Two statements closed the 2015 World Social Justice Day, the first by Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut Hamed Al Hammami represented by the organization’s Director of Social and Human Sciences Program, Ms. Seiko Sujita, and the second by Director of ESCWA Social Development Division Frederico Neto who also awarded the artists with commemorative shields.
