On the sidelines of the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris in December 2015, ESCWA organized a side event on “Climate Change Impact and Vulnerability Assessments in the Arab Region”.

ESCWA Climate Change Officer Tarek Sadek and Consultant George Nasr delivered presentations at the side event on "Projected Climate and Extreme Indices and Vulnerability Indicators in the Arab Region" and “Building Climate Change Strategies Based on Scientific Outputs: Science-Policy Interface” respectively. 

Discussions tackled the issues of disaster risk reduction and climate resilience in the Arab region; the impacts of response measures on socio-economic sectors in the Arab region; projected climate change impacts in Jordan; the recent observed climate change over the Arabian peninsula; the effect of the change in rain season on agriculture in Sudan; and the role of the league of Arab states in regional coordination to deal with climate change issues.

The event shared insights from regional initiatives and national efforts to assess climate change impacts, reduce disaster risk and enhance resilience through climate change adaptation strategies and measures to advance sustainable development in the Arab region.
