What:    A regional parliamentary forum organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB) on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab region, and in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
 
When:             Thursday 24 and Friday 25 January at 9:00am
 
Where:            ESCWA Headquarters, Riad el-Solh Square, Beirut, Lebanon
 
Why:      The Parliamentary Forum aims to enhance the engagement of parliaments in the implementation, follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to strengthen the knowledge and capacity of parliamentarians from the Arab region  so that they can play a more effective role in advancing sustainable development efforts.
 
The Forum is an annual regional platform that provides an opportunity to review experiences and achievements of parliaments in relation to the 2030 Agenda. It is one of a series of regional meetings that feed into the Arab Forum on Sustainable Development (AFSD) and the High-level Political Forum for Sustainable Development (HLPF).
  
 
Who:    

  • Mr. Mounir Tabet, the Acting Executive Secretary of ESCWA;
  • Mr. Khaled Abdel Shafi, the UNDP Director of the Regional Hub in Amman;
  • Mr. Rami Ahmad, the Advisor to the President and Special Envoy on the Sustainable Development Goals at the IsDB.

 
Participants also include parliamentarians from Arab countries, including representatives from upper and lower houses, experts from regional and international organizations, United Nations entities and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), as well as government representatives and non-governmental organizations.
