– Under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Transport and Public Works Mohamad Safadi, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) will convene the 9th Session of its Committee on Transport on 26-28 February 2008 at Holiday Inn-Dunes, Verdun Str., Beirut.
The meeting, which starts at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday 26 February, will be attended by representatives of ministries of transport, public works, interior, planning and economics, as well as senior officials specialized in multimodal transport in UN-ESCWA member countries in addition to representatives of concerned regional organizations as observers including The League of Arab States, The Gulf Cooperation Council, The Arab Union for Land Transport, The Arab Union of Maritime Carriers, The Union of Arab Chambers of Maritime Shipping, The Union for Federation of Arab Ports and The General Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture for Arab Countries. The UN-ESCWA experts and advisors will also attend the meeting.
The issues that will be discussed include the proposed draft convention on international multimodal transport of goods in the Arab Mashreq, as well as the implementation of the Agreement on International Roads in the Arab Mashreq with particular emphasis on the priority routes M40 and M45 and the implementation of other components of the Integrated Transport System in the Arab Mashreq (ITSAM).
UN-ESCWA is one of the regional commissions of the United Nations. It includes: Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Syrian Arab Republic, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. It aims to support economic and social cooperation between the countries of the Western Asia region and promotes sustainable development programs in order to achieve regional integration.
