What: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is hosting the 38th Committee Meeting of the Common External Tariff for the Arab Countries under the auspices of the League of Arab States (Arab Economic Integration Section at the Arab Customs Union Division of the League of Arab States (LAS)) at the request of higher council of the Lebanese Customs.
Why: Recommendation of the Arab Custom Union (ACU) Committee in its 38th meeting which states:
“To urge the committee of the Common External Tariff to unify the Arab Custom Tariff for the countries that are ready for the negotiation process in implementation of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit resolution, in addition to the reservation included in the recommendation.”
When: From Monday October 30, 2017 to Friday, November 3, 2017
Opening: At 10:30 am on Monday 30 October to Friday 3 November 2017
Where: ESCWA headquarters, Riad el-Solh Square, Beirut
Who: Kingdom of Bahrain, Republic of Tunisia, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, State of Palestine, State of Qatar, State of Kuwait, Republic of Lebanon, Kingdom of Morocco.
The Committee's meeting includes 40-45 experts from the Arab States concerned in negotiating and agreeing on a Common External Tariff (CET).
ESCWA is hosting this meeting as a good will gesture to the host country (Lebanon) and in the framework of the ESCWA involvement in the efforts to date surrounding ACU by providing assistance in the discussions and negotiations processes.
