Social Justice Day observed at ESCWA by exploring ‘Equality and Justice in the work of Gibran Khalil Gibran’

Lebanese Social Affairs minister and high-level intellectuals to attend

 
 
What: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is marking the 11th World Day of Social Justice. This year’s theme is: “Celebrating Equality and Justice in the work of Gibran Khalil Gibran.”
 
When: Tuesday 20 February 2018, at 11:00am
 
Where: UN House, Riad el-Solh Square, Beirut
 
Why: The event focuses on the principal concepts of social justice in the work of Gibran Khalil Gibran who tackled not only beauty, life and death, but also poverty, justice, peace, freedom and the need to safeguard the rights of all people. ESCWA aims to highlight the concepts of social justice by paying tribute to the work of one of the most accomplished writers and philosophers, with a special focus on how he perceived justice and equality.
 
Observance of World Day of Social Justice comes in line with the efforts of the international community in eradicating poverty, promoting full employment and decent work, and ensuring gender equality and access to social wellbeing and justice for all.
 
Special features:
-Message of the United Nations Secretary-General;
-Panel discussion on equality and justice in Gibran’s literary work;
-Panel discussion on equality and justice in Gibran’s artwork;
-Musical rendition of Gibran’s main poems by Lebanese tenor Gabriel Abdel Nour;
-Exhibition of a number of Gibran’s renowned artwork.

-Lebanese Minister of Social Affairs Pierre Bou Assi;
-United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary, Mohamed Ali Alhakim;
 
Participants in the first panel:
-Lebanese poet Henri Zgheib;
-Literary Critic Francesco Medici;
-President of the Gibran National Committee Tarek Chidiac;
-Renowned author Alexandre Najjar.
 
Participants in the second panel:
-Researcher Joumana Bou Fakhreddine;
- Art critic Nagi Abdullatif.
 
Panels moderator: Media personality Roula Moawad.
 
A crowd of diplomats, intellectuals, UN representatives and civil society personalities working on social justice from Lebanon and the Arab region will attend the 2018 Social Justice Day.
