Population Division of ECLAC/ CELADE traces its origins to the early 1950s, in response to the growing awareness of gaps in knowledge of population issues. The Agreement between the UN and Government of Chile (represented by the University of Chile) on the Provision of Technical Assistance for the Establishment of the Latin American Demographic Centre was signed on 13 August 1957.
