An acute contagious septicemic disease of fowl, especially chickens, that is marked by fever, weakness, diarrhoea, and petechial haemorrhages in the mucous membranes, is caused by a bacterium of the genus Pasteurella (P. multocida syn. avicida), and is highly destructive to all types of domestic poultry and most wild birds called also chicken cholera.
