The ‘feminisation of HIV and AIDS’ is an often quoted recognition by governments and international organisations that women and girls are increasingly infected by HIV and AIDS, and carry many of the burdens related to the pandemic. Globally, the percentage of people living with HIV and AIDS who are women and girls has risen sharply from 41% in 1997 4 to just below 50% today.
