The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing in cooperation with the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) in Sudan a series of webinars that aim at providing ongoing technical support during all stages of the population and housing and agriculture censuses in Sudan. The webinars aim to enhance Sudan’s capacities in undertaking censuses according to international recommendations through the transfer of good practices and experiences of countries from the region and beyond that have recently conducted censuses. The webinars further address the use of technology including geospatial information in planning for the 2022 censuses in Sudan. 

Webinar #1: Undertaking Censuses Using Technology: Challenges and Opportunities in the Case of Sudan

The webinar focused on the challenges and opportunities of using technology in undertaking censuses in Sudan. It offered an opportunity for CBS’s experts to review what has been done so far regarding the undertaking of the 2022 censuses and what the future plans are. The webinar also offered a platform for the exchange of experiences from Jordan’s Department of Statistics that have already conducted its censuses using technology and from RealSoft company on the objectives of using technology in censuses and the role of programmes and systems in the various stages of the census. It concluded with an open discussion about future needs for statistical capacity building in censuses.

Webinar #2: Use of Geospatial Information in Planning for Population and Housing, and Agriculture Censuses in Sudan

The webinar focused on the challenges and opportunities of using geospatial information in planning for the population and agricultural censuses in Sudan. The webinar offered an opportunity to benefit from ESCWA’s expertise in the area of geospatial information and its support during the planning phase of Sudan’s population and housing, and agricultural censuses. It also provided a platform for exchanging experiences from Jordan and the Arab Republic of Egypt, who had previously conducted their censuses using geographical data, and from other regional experts. The webinar was concluded by defining the topics of the upcoming seminars.

Webinar #3: Use of Geospatial Information in Planning for Population and Housing, and Agriculture Censuses in Sudan (continued)

In response to the recommendations of the second webinar, ESCWA organized a session chaired by Mr. Ismail Lubbad, in which Dr. Amor Laaribi, a consultant in geospatial information, gave an overview of the United Nations’ recommendations for the 2020 round of censuses that recognizes the availability of a wide range of geospatial technological tools for use in census mapping. He presented the benefits of the use of geospatial information technologies at all the stages of the Census. Dr. Laaribi concluded with a set of recommendations that include an assessment of the infrastructure of the geospatial information system for census purposes, which would facilitate the adoption of such technology during censuses.
