The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in population censuses is becoming increasingly common.. GIS can be used at several stages pf census taking , from locating housing units, building relationships between variables, delineating administrative boundaries ( district, village, ...) and statistical ones (e.g., census blocks), to dissemination and spacial analysis of data by "location".

An important output of using GIS in censuses is the statistical atlas, which is considered notable way of illustrating  different types of data and indicators at various geographical levels.
In order to enhance the regional capacity of some Arab member countries to collect, analyze process, disseminate and utilize the results of 2010 population and housing censuses round, UNFPA and ESCWA signed an agreement to implement a series of workshops and training sessions in the field of population census for 9 Arab countries (Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria).
To this end, ESCWA Statistics Division is organizing a training workshop on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in population censuses in Amman, Jordan during the period 20-21 December 2011.

The outputs of this training workshop can be used to enhance the use of GIS in the different stages of population censuses in the Arab countries. In addition, this workshop is expected to help us identify needs for capacity building in specific areas in the GIS applications.
