Sudan’s Social Policy Country Profile was the subject of a one-day Expert Group Meeting (EGM) in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, on 10 December 2007. The meeting organized by ESCWA in collaboration with UNDP Khartoum and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) aimed to review and validate the draft report on the state of social policy in the country. The preparation of the country profile is part of ESCWA’s continuing technical advisory support to Sudan within the framework of the Social Development Division’s advocacy work on Integrated Social Policy.

The EGM, held under the patronage of the Minister of State for Social Welfare, Women and Children, created a forum for government officials, civil society representatives and Sudanese experts to debate social policy challenges and priorities. In his opening Address, the Minister of State for Social Affairs, stressed the importance of developing and implementing a coherent integrated social policy for Sudan in an era of economic growth. The participants reviewed the first draft of the report, and provided input and comments on it. The EGM was also an opportunity to review with the group options for follow-up activities to the report, including the holding of a National Conference on Social Policy during the first half of 2008.

The ESCWA delegates to Khartoum also held meetings with the Minister of State for Social Welfare and a number of senior officials from the Ministry as well with UNDP Sudan and the representative of ECA to discuss future cooperation concerning the activities that will follow the report including the National Conference on Social Policy
