Background information
In accordance with the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA), ESCWA Centre for Women is determined to pursue its efforts to assist ESCWA member states in gender mainstreaming their strategies, plans, and projects. In response to the requests of the different member states, the Centre plans to hold a sub-regional training workshop to assist in building the capacity of the staff of the national machineries for women of Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Oman, Yemen and Qatar. The three days sub-regional workshop will focus on how to mainstream the work of the different line ministries, while concentrating on the basic concepts of gender and gender analysis. The training will also refer to application of international methods in strategic planning.
Objectives of the workshop
The objective of the workshop is to enhance the knowledge and skills of the staff of the national machineries for women to better address gender imbalances and mainstream a gender perspective through: -Enhanced understanding of the basic concepts of gender and gender analysis. -Increased knowledge of the current challenges facing the national machineries for women regarding mainstreaming a gender perspective in the different line ministries. -Better analytical skills to mainstream a gender perspective in certain sectors with a special focus on success stories in certain countries -Improved understanding of the elements of strategic planning needed in every national machinery in order to function efficiently and effectively The workshop will also establish the foundation for a regional forum for the exchange of good practices on gender mainstreaming, and the sharing of views on and experiences in overcoming the challenges regarding mainstreaming a gender perspective in certain sectors and in the different strategies, plans and projects of member states.
