Within the "Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening of the Iraqi Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works" Programme implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) - Iraq, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing with the technical support of the "Lebanese Institute of Finance, Basil Fuleihan Institute," a two-day seminar on Modern Practices in Financial Management and Internal Audit on the 29 and 31 of March 2008 in Beirut, Lebanon.
 
The seminar aims at introducing participants to the new trends and modern techniques related to Public Financial Management (PFM) as well as internal audit.  Selected experts and professionals specialized in public financial management and budgeting, with significant experience in public sector issues will provide participants with a detailed overview of processes and standards of modern budgeting and public accounting.  The seminar will use a comparative approach in which different models from the MENA region will be examined and used as case studies.
 
17 senior managers, decision makers in the field of budget and public accounting from the Iraqi Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works (MMPW), the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation are expected to benefit from this initiative and instigate change within their respective divisions and sections.
