ESCWA and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) are organizing the regional workshop on international trade statistics for the Arab countries in Amman during 12-14 June 2012 in collaboration with the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) and the Department of Statistics of Jordan. The workshop aims at increasing the participants’ knowledge in the area of collecting, compiling and disseminating international trade statistics in goods and services. Participants will have an opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge of the recent and relevant international classifications through focused presentations on the technical aspects pertaining to a number of service sectors such as tourism, travel transport and manufacturing services on inputs owned by others. High on the agenda of this workshop will be also the introduction of a number of new areas in international trade statistics as trade and globalization through collecting FDI and FATS data and multinational corporations, liking trade with other economic and social statistics, and measuring trade in value–added. Lastly, the workshop will touch upon the integrated approach of trade in goods and services that addresses among other things quality assurance in addition to a round table discussion on the future developments of international trade statistics.
The workshop will provide an ample opportunity to all participants from national statistical offices, central banks and customs administrations in the Arab countries to take active part during the workshop and make presentations on the status of international trade statistics in their respective countries highlighting the prevailing difficulties, gaps and future improvement needs. The workshop will be interactive in nature, and participants throughout the different sessions will be able to validate their acquired knowledge in the field, and to gain new skills.
