Energy data represents a basic input to all sectoral and national development plans, particularly in ESCWA member countries where energy sector has a vital role in the economic and social development. However, the quality of energy statistics in most of ESCWA countries still needs capacity building to meet the appropriate statistical requirements for formulating national development plans and international reporting. ESCWA member countries face several problems concerning the availability and overall quality of data on energy. Therefore, ESCWA is implementing a project to strengthen national capacity in developing energy statistics and balance in ESCWA member countries to enhance the capacity of national officials on compiling statistics on supply and use by all sectors for all energy sources as well as for harmonizing the definitions and classification and produce yearly energy balance. The objective of this meeting organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in collaboration with IEA and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), is to provide advanced training on energy statistics including oil, natural gas, electricity and renewable energies, to advocate for in-house training to build capacity of national teams working on energy statistics. This training targeted Egyptian, Iraqi and Yemeni national officials from the National Statistical Office, Ministry of Electricity and Ministry of Energy.
