The electrical grid in Yemen barely services 52% of its population. A number of challenges attributed mainly to growing demand, limited financial and technical capacities and dwindling local energy resources are pressuring this already low coverage downward and are compromising the country’s energy security.

In responding to a request by the Government of Yemen ESCWA is implementing a capacity building workshop on “Assessing the Current Situation of the Electrical Sub-sector in Yemen to Induce Strengthened Sustainability and Reduced Environmental Impact” on 1-3 October 2013 at the UN-House in Beirut. The objective of this capacity building workshop is to enhance the capacity of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy to assess the current state of the electrical sub-sector in Yemen. Such exercise will support the Ministry in developing information based policies and strategic plans for a more efficient electrical sub-sector.
