Arabic Language Day 2018

The United Nations observes annually the Arabic Language Day on18 December, the day the General Assembly approved Arabic as an official UN Language in 1973. This event was launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2010.  The objective is to promote equal use of all six official working languages throughout the organization and to celebrate multilingualism, as a core value, and cultural diversity. The celebration of the Arabic Language day aims to acknowledge the contribution of the ‘Arabic language’ in enriching science, philosophy, literature, art and universal culture.

The Conference Services Section at ESCWA, where Arabic is a main language, will join the United Nations System in marking this occasion.  The United Nations House in Beirut will be hosting public and intellectual figures, academics and UN staff.  Poetry readings and Arabic language dictation are some of the activities that will be conducted.
