Cyber Legislation

During the last years, ESCWA focused on promoting cybersafety and combating cybercrime. In this context the Commission published a report that included a policy framework to enhance cybersecurity and build confidence in cyberspace. ESCWA also organized capacity building workshops and advisory services to its member countries on this topic.

Previously, ESCWA worked on the development and the harmonization of cyber legislation in the Arab countries, and it produced important publications and reports on Cyber Legislation. The most important publication was the “ESCWA Cyber Legislation Directives” which include model laws covering the main six areas of cyber legislation: e-communication and freedom of expression, e-transaction and e-Signature, e-Commerce and consumer protection, Personal data protection, cybercrime and Intellectual property rights on the cyberspace. ESCWA also organized many expert group meetings and capacity building workshops at regional and national levels in the framework of its project “Regional Harmonization of Cyber Legislation to promote the knowledge society in the Arab world” and provided advisory services to 12 Arab countries.
