The Parliament has officially approved in its last legislative meeting the "Arab Environment Facility" (AEF), initiated by the Minister of Environment Nazem El Khoury, further to its acknowledgment by the Council of Ministers in 05/10/2011, and the issuance of its own Decree No. 6771. This governmental project signed at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo in 2009, is of high value since it aims at helping the Arab countries to ensure environmental protection, reduce the environmental degradation cost in the Arab region, develop competencies, enhance employment opportunities and increase investment in the Arab world as well as the size of the Arab environmental market. Lebanon had already signed the project’s original structure with eight other Arab countries: Morocco, Syria, Oman, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine and Tunisia; three of which has ratified it till today: Syria, Palestine and Lebanon. The Lebanese government remains the founding member of the "Arab Environment Facility," as it has launched the project’s idea to promote the environmental situation in the Arab region through the innovation of a governmental facility which evaluates its resources and contributes to sustainable development projects, mainly the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
