United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim called for enhancing cooperation between the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission (LAEC), affiliated to the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS), in many projects “as we can benefit from the expertise of the Commission in the implementation of common mechanisms and programs related to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to the issues of climate change and their impact on nature and people.” |

Costing Violence against Women |
On 25 and 26 January 2017, ESCWA convened a meeting to discuss a study it is drafting on the “Status of Arab Women,” with particular emphasis on violence against women. The two-day meeting gathered prominent experts from the region and beyond representing civil society and UN entities working on the subject matter. Hosted at the UN House in Beirut, the meeting fell within the scope of the ESCWA project “Estimating the Cost of the Economic Impact of Violence against Women in the Arab Region” that is conducted in partnership with UN-Women. |

Review recurrent and non-recurrent publications on regional integration and trade reforms |
The Expert Group Meeting is organized by ESCWA in cooperation with UNCTAD. The participants included high-level economists and experts from Arab universities and think tanks and representatives of Arab regional and sub-regional organizations such as the League of Arab States and the Arab Maghreb Union. The meeting aimed to critically review the drafts of the recurrent publication on the third edition of assessing Arab economic integration and the non-recurrent publication on trade costs in the Arab region. The meeting discussed also the findings of the World Investment Report 2019 prepared by UNCTAD. |

The League of Arab States and the Ministry of Social Solidarity in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in collaboration with the Statistics Division at the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), held the Arab Regional Seminar on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as part of the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Sustainable Development Plan 2030, on 13-14 January 2019 at the headquarters of the Secretariat of the League of Arab States. |

Amman Hosts Seminar on Islam and Science |
On 5 May 2016, experts from across the Islamic world gathered at the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) in Amman, Jordan, to participate in the International Seminar on Islam and Science. Under the theme “Islamic Perspectives on Science’s Big Questions” the Seminar discussed a variety of topics, including Islam and Modern Science; Cosmology and Evolution; and Islam- Science Relationship: The Way Forward. |
