Major Challenges Facing the Region on the Agenda of the First ESCWA Arab Economics Forum |
Mr. Marwan Kheireddine, Lebanese Minister of State, Dr. Rima Khalaf, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, Head of the Delegation of the European Union, and Mr. Rida Saidi, Tunisia’s Minister of Economy, will open the First ESCWA Arab Economics Forum at 10:00 am on Friday 23 November 2012 at the ESCWA headquarters, Riad Solh Square, Beirut. The Forum will conclude on 24 November 2012. |

UN Launches Millennium Development Goals Report 2011 Western Asia Betters Maternal, Children Survival and Health |
Beirut, 7 July 2011 (United Nations Information Service) – A United Nations report released today on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) showed that Western Asia made good progress in improving the survival and health of mothers and children, as maternal deaths declined by 52 percent between 1990 and 2008 largely due to increases in skilled attendance at birth, skilled antenatal care and contraceptive use, as well as a drop in adolescent childbearing. |

World Water Day at ESCWA Urged Optimizing Water Use |
Beirut, 22 March 2012 (UN Information Services) — United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said agriculture is by far the main user of freshwater, and unless we increase our capacity to wisely manage its use, we will fail to end hunger and we will open the door to a range of other ills, including drought, famine and political instability. The admonition came in a message by Ban on the occasion of the World Water Day, which was marked today by at the UN House in Beirut by ESCWA, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Information Centre in Beirut (UNIC). |

Understanding Livelihood Solutions Under Protracted Forced Displacement: The Case of Homs’ Refugees Population in Lebanon |
Lebanon hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees per capita in the world. In Sep 2020, the total number of registered Syrian refugees in Lebanon accounted to 879,529. The protracted nature of the displacement coupled with a significant funding gap in humanitarian and development aid from one side and the increased socio-economic needs of refugees and host communities from the other side limited the ability of the state to manage the conflict and turn it into an opportunity. |

It also discusses the importance of estimating the cost of child marriage, examines the feasibility of undertaking a costing study in the Arab region, and reviews the availability of data needed to implement such a task, as well as the appropriate framework to consider when approaching costing child marriage in the region. |

ESCWA Discusses Social Protection as Development |
ESCWA today opened a workshop on “Social Protection as Development” at the UN House in Beirut with the aim of developing effective and integrated systems in this field. The workshop’s opening was attended by Palestinian Minister of Social Affairs Magida El Masri, Jordanian Minister of Labor Mahmoud Kafawin, ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Nadim Khoury and Lebanese Minister of Social Affairs’ representative Randa Bou Hamdan. |
