The workshop will address the institutional environment for official statistics in support of monitoring progress towards the SDGs, including governance, leadership, coordination mechanisms and tools as well as dialogue and partnership between producers and users of data and statistics. |

Regional Commission calls for Arab Integration as a Development Imperative in the 21st Century Despite obstacles, there are still good reasons to believe that the dream of Arab unity can be realized |
On 25 February 2014, UN Undersecretary General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf launched from Tunis a remarkable report entitled “Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative” with the participation of Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, former Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and a crowd of political, economic, intellectual and public figures. Media representatives who took part in the ceremony received a press kit, which we will re-publish over five parts, in view of the importance of the issues the Report addresses. |

Regional Workshop on the Integration of Big Data and Geospatial Information for the Compilation of SDG Indicators in Arab Countries |
Geographic location is needed to know where a situation is present or where an event has occurred, and to allow decision makers to respond. The integration of geospatial information with data and statistics for SDGs is also instrumental for the production of a number of indicators and in enabling data interoperability across data ecosystems and linking data sets within and across countries. |

UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro said on Saturday that the Arab region is emerging as a true leader in development – from burgeoning intra-regional investment in infrastructure to energy security. The Arab countries and people are doing more and more to contribute to one another’s’ development. “It is not an exaggeration to say that the Arab Region is one of vast historical and cultural richness. Today this wealth is, in many cases, complemented by economic prosperity,” Migiro said. |
