Focus Group Meeting 2 on the Regional Initiative for Promoting Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in rural areas of the Arab Region in Jordan. |
In the framework of the “Regional Initiative for Promoting Small – Scale Renewable Energy Applications in Rural Areas of the Arab Region (REGEND)”, the finalization of the selection of the local community and the establishment of the Local Facilitating Team (LFT) in Jordan necessitates a Focus Group Meeting. The objective of the meeting is to finalize the assessment phase and the selection of the local community where the project activities will be undertaken as well to establish the Local Facilitation Team (LFT) in Jordan and the selection of its members. |

Energy for Sustainable Development |
With nine of its member countries accounting for some 56 and 30 per cent of oil and natural gas world supplies, the UN-ESCWA region is especially rich in these resources, said Executive Secretary Bader Omar AlDafa. At the same time, other member countries have little or no gas or oil reserves. Such disparities among and between countries of the region had kept average growth over the past two years at about 5.6 per cent.

Several representatives of national statistical offices (NSOs) from ESCWA member states as well as representatives from line ministries and other related entities took part in meeting. |

The Role of Small and Medium Enterprises in Promoting Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency |
The League of Arab States (LAS), ESCWA, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy (MOERE) in Egypt, and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) are jointly organizing, in cooperation with the European Union’s project “Mediterranean Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector –MED-ENEC”, the Second Arab Forum for Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) entitled “Enhancing the Role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Promoting RE & EE” on 18-19 June 2014 in El Gouna Movenpick Hotel, Egypt. |

Financing for Development |
The purpose of the Working Group on Financing Sustainable Development (WG-FfD) is to act as a regional hub for cooperation and coordination among the United Nations, the League of Arab States and their specialized organizations and agencies as well as relevant international financial institutions in the implementation of their work on financing for development in the Arab region, including undertaking joint initiatives and research on regional financing for development priority areas. |

Improving Shared Water Resources Cooperation within the Framework of Global and Regional Agreements |
Most Arab States depend for their water supply on shared water resources as two-thirds of all fresh water resources in the region cross one country border or more. The allocation of these resources among riparian countries has substantial environmental and socio-economic implications at the local, national and regional levels. Therefore, effective cooperation on the management and distribution of the scarce water supplies would contribute to the optimization in water resource allocation and use as well as alleviation of potential conflicts. |
