Commission's 28th Session Continues Discussions, Reviews Economic and Social Developments in the Arab Region |
The 28th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) today continued its discussions, and assessed latest findings on economic and social developments in the Arab region. High-level government officials from the member countries of ESCWA were presented with the “Survey of Economic and Social Developments in the Western Asia Region” which covers 2013 and early 2014. |

ESCWA and the League of Arab States hold a conference on disability in the Arab region |
This year marks the 21st commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Over one billion people - or approximately 15 percent of the world population - live with disability. In the Arab region, significant strides have been made over recent years to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities. Despite these efforts however, persons with disabilities in Arab countries continue to face substantial barriers in accessing health care, education and employment. |

Regional Commission and Carnegie Middle East Partner to Discuss 2013 Arab MDGs Report |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and Carnegie Middle East Centre are organizing a panel discussion on “The Arab Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Report: Facing Challenges and Looking Beyond 2015” to be held at 10:00 am on Friday, the 15th of November 2013 at the UN House, Riad El-Solh Square, Beirut. This panel discussion is a follow up to the launching ceremony of the 2013 Arab MDGs Report that took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in September of this year. |

Major Issues on International Economic Agenda Focus of UNCTAD-UNESCWA Workshop |
“The pace of globalization is accelerating, and in turn both the challenges and opportunities facing our member countries are increasing,” said UNESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Atif Kubursi. “The situation in the current round of WTO negotiations is critical and it is very important that our member countries are best prepared for the upcoming deliberations,” he said. Kubursi was speaking at the opening today of a three week training course at the UN House, Beirut, in cooperation with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). |

Energy for Sustainable Development |
With nine of its member countries accounting for some 56 and 30 per cent of oil and natural gas world supplies, the UN-ESCWA region is especially rich in these resources, said Executive Secretary Bader Omar AlDafa. At the same time, other member countries have little or no gas or oil reserves. Such disparities among and between countries of the region had kept average growth over the past two years at about 5.6 per cent.
