Participatory Human Development in Post-Conflict Countries in the ESCWA region |
Rationale:The concept of participatory development is not new in the region, neither is the practice of social dialogue and popular participation at the local level. Little however, has been done by governments undergoing or emerging from conflict to hold broad public consultations to identify development priorities and generate equitable social policies.

ESCWA Releases 2012 Annual Report |
Under the overall message of “Go Forward”, ESCWA has launched its annual report for the year 2012, in Arabic and English. The report reviews a year of achievements for the regional commission against the backdrop of continued transitions and socio-economic challenges in the Arab region. It focuses on the seven key substantive areas of the ESCWA mandate: sustainable development, social development, economic development, information and communications technology, statistics, advancement of women, and conflict mitigation and development. |

A crowd of Arab ministers and experts have agreed on the importance of ESCWA continuing to support National Women’s Machineries in order to estimate the economic cost of violence against women in the Arab region and to implement the Action Plan for Gender Equality in line with the specificities of States. They also stressed the need to continue to support the capacity building of the Arab States to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). |

Tallawy Says We Can Challenge and Succeed at Opening of Annual Arab Banking Conference |
UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy hoped the participation of Arab banks in the reconstruction of Lebanon would be one of the first to spark off this process. She commended the outstanding achievements of the Arab banks over the last few years within the national and regional economic sphere. Tallawy noted, “We have a significant example of this, namely the award given to Lebanese Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh. It shows we can rise to the challenge and succeed.” |

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) are joining their efforts to advise Arab countries on available instruments for financing sustainable energy transitions, identify suitable ways to make greater use of international financing means available for the building sectors, and build the capacity of member States to secure funding for upscaling energy efficiency for Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Development. |

New report: Strengthening Social Protection for Persons with Disabilities in Arab Countries |
According to the most recent data collected by ESCWA in its new report entitled “Strengthening Social Protection for Persons with Disabilities in Arab countries”, the disability prevalence rate in the Arab region is around 2.9 per cent. |
