Amman Hosts Seventh Meeting of ESCWA Technical Committee |
The Jordanian capital Amman hosted the Seventh Meeting of the ESCWA Technical Committee on 18 and 19 March 2013, in the ESCWA Technology Center in the Royal Scientific Society. During the opening of the meeting, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf said that in the coming period, ESCWA will expand its activities that support the resolutions of the Third Arab Economic, Social and Development Summit held in Riyadh last January, which are concerned with Arab regional integration. |

Implementation of the Institutional Gaps Assessment Methodology in the Workforce Planning |
The workshop will introduce the Institutional Gaps Assessment Methodology to a core team from the General Directorate of Job Planning in the General Personnel Council in the State of Palestine, as a scientific tool to evaluate the capacities of concerned civil servants to develop for their institutions a strategic workforce planning framework aligned to the national development strategy. The Strategic Workforce Planning Framework (the Framework) will assist the concerned institutions to better understand and prepare for their future workforce needs, and to have the right civil servants in the right roles at the right time, to meet the longer-term strategic institutional.

ESCWA strongly condemns Israel’s attacks on UNRWA schools in Gaza: another episode in a pattern of international law violations |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) joined the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in condemning in the strongest terms the shelling of the Jabalia Elementary Girls’ School on Wednesday, 30 July 2014. The targeted UNRWA-run school was a United Nations-designated shelter in Gaza and a safe haven for 3,300 civilians who had sought refuge there under the banner of the United Nations and international law. |

To mark World Water Day 2014, ESCWA cooperated with the Association of the Friends of Ibrahim Abdel Al, the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI) and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in holding a seminar entitled "The Water-Energy Nexus: Issues and Challenges", on 21 March, at the Order of the Press in Beirut. |

Ninth Session of ESCWA Committee on Energy Opens |
Director of ESCWA Sustainable Development and Productivity Division Roula Majdalani today said that much can be done to increase energy efficiency in most Arab countries, which, in coming years, will suffer from the dangers of falling short of meeting the increased demand for power that will rise by 115 percent during the years 2011-2020. Majdalani was speaking at the opening of the Ninth Session of ESCWA‘s Committee on Energy at the Regency Hotel, Kuwait. The Committee concludes tomorrow Thursday, and is attended by specialized representatives of ESCWA Member States. |
