The ESCWA Initiative to Produce PPP Estimates Discussed in Washington |
During a meeting held by the World Bank in Washington D.C. in May 2015, ESCWA delivered a briefing on the methodology and challenges hindered the implementation of the project of producing Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) estimates for the years 2012 and 2013 based on the experiences gained during the 2011 International Comparison Program (ICP) Round. |

ESCWA and the League of Arab States hold a conference on disability in the Arab region |
This year marks the 21st commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Over one billion people - or approximately 15 percent of the world population - live with disability. In the Arab region, significant strides have been made over recent years to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities. Despite these efforts however, persons with disabilities in Arab countries continue to face substantial barriers in accessing health care, education and employment. |

The conference was organized by the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) at LAU and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in partnership with the Danish Centre for Research on Women and Gender (KVINFO) from 8 to 10 August 2016 in Beirut. |

UNESCWA Committee Mulls Technology Center |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said Monday member countries really need a regional institution that works toward increasing demand for technology and investing it better in socio-economic development. Tallawy was speaking at the opening of the Third Meeting of the UNESCWA Consultative Committee on Scientific and Technological Development and Technological Innovation (ESTIC) at the Holiday Inn Dunes Hotel (Verdun) in Beirut. A major focus of this meeting is the establishment of the ESCWA Technology Center (ETC). |
