Executive Secretary Visits Former Head of State |
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCWA Mohamed Ali Al-Hakim paid on 2 August 2017 a courtesy visit to former Lebanese President Amin Gemayel in his office in Bikfaya. Al-Hakim took over his functions at the helm of ESCWA last May. The two officials discussed collaboration between ESCWA and Lebanon in addition to the economic and social cooperation activities carried out by the Commission in the region. They also discussed the National Agenda for the Future of Syria program initiated by ESCWA over three years ago. |

Towards a Legal Framework for Intellectual Property that Promotes Innovation and Creativity in the ESCWA Member Countries |
This study is divided into three major chapters. The first chapter discusses the call for creating more incentive rules for innovators in the ESCWA countries. In addition, the second chapter discusses clear legal rules in determining ownership of intellectual property rights. The third chapter deals with the legal reinforcement of the means of exploiting intellectual property rights and its role in stimulating creativity. |

Management Training for the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights |
Twenty senior civil servants from the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights have completed a management training in Beirut. The training that forms a component of the Danish Government funded UNDP project “Return to Law and Promotion of Human Rights”, was organized by UNESCWA in coordination with the OHCHR. The training program focused on management topics and was complimented by Human Rights issues that were of benefit to many of the staff of the newly set-up Ministry. |

Workshop on Planning for Population and Housing Censuses By Using Technology in selected Arab countries |
The workshop aims at developing the comprehensive census framework for countries in difficult circumstances (Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Sudan and Libya), including the plan of action, timetable, estimated budget, census structure, use of geographic information systems in various census stages, data collection using tablets and modern means, and to benefit from the experiences of countries which have successfully conducted censuses using such technologies. |

Workshop for the Ministry of National Economy on Project Formulation |
A training course for the personnel of the Ministry of National Economy (MoNE) was held in Ramallah, during the period 13-20 December 2005. This course aimed at enhancing the capacities of the MoNE personnel on formulating and packaging practical development projects according to modern techniques, understanding the approach of donors in the provision of aid and related services, and negotiating with and presenting proposals to funding agencies. |
