58 Arab Figures Echo ESCWA’s Initiative, Condemn Violence against Women |
By initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on International Women’s Day, 58 Arab figures from various intellectual backgrounds today decried violence against women in an appeal that they signed, cognizant of the challenges faced by women in the process of democratic transition in the Arab region. It was circulated in member countries undergoing political transition (Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen) as well as in the ESCWA host country, Lebanon. Regional Workshop on Poverty Measurement and Monitoring in the Era of Big Data |
The workshop explores recent developments in statistical methodologies and new data sources for measuring and monitoring poverty at various levels and dimensions. Specifically, the workshop aims to provide guidance to the NSOs on new knowledge and methodologies to measure and monitor SDGs and Agenda 2030 and identify opportunities, challenges and limitations of using big data for official poverty measurement in low and middle income countries. The workshop will also explore the potential of high frequency surveys to monitor poverty over time and across small areas, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as refugee populations, and identify future research needs in statistical methodologies and the use of new data sources for living conditions and poverty indicators. Ultimately the workshop will help to achieve a common and improved understanding of new knowledge, methodologies and data sources that would contribute to monitoring poverty over time and across small areas and improving the measurement of some living conditions and poverty indicators for Goals 1 and 10. |

Beirut, 30 January 2019 (Communication and Information Unit)--Tomorrow at noon, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will launch the first-of-its-kind Arab region Data Portal (EDP) that offers users a variety of statistical services and products covering a range of social and economics areas, while facilitating open access to a wealth of statistical data, analysis, and information on its member states. |

Measuring and Monitoring the Living Conditions in Palestine |
President of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) Ola Awad today commended the signature of a memorandum of understanding between PCBS and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), at the UN House in Beirut. Awad said “the objective of this agreement between PCBS and ESCWA is the implementation of a survey to assess the impact of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza strip in 2014, and the socioeconomic living conditions of Palestinian households in the West Bank and the Gaza strip. |

Civil Aviation and Air Transport in the Arab World |
In its 17 January 1997 resolution proclaiming 7 December as the International Civil Aviation Day, the United Nations General Assembly said "future development of international civil aviation can greatly help to create and preserve friendship and understanding among the nations and peoples of the world". Such statement cannot be truer today, with the growing need to meet the "other", the ever-increasing flows of travelers, and the multiplication of low cost carriers (LCCs), recently introduced into the Arab region. |
