The post-colonial socio-political landscape of the ESCWA region has witnessed a seemingly endless chain of conflict, fragile peace and constantly heightened levels of political tension, all of which have had negative ramifications for governance and socio-economic development in the region. Indeed, conflict, political tension, rentier economies and parochial systems of governance have undermined social cohesion, access to natural resources, inclusive growth, economic diversification, justice and peace itself. |

The Expert Group Meeting on Triggers of Transformation: Resilient Governance Institutions in Conflict-affected Countries was organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in partnership with the Regional Hub for Arab States of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and held in Beirut, Lebanon, on 1-2 December 2015. |

Social Development |
Despite progress on a number of human development indicators in ESCWA countries in recent decades, inequality, vulnerability and social exclusion have not decreased and the link between economic growth and social development remains weak. In many ESCWA countries, certain social groups such as persons with disabilities, informal workers and the poor often lack adequate protection and remain highly vulnerable, especially in times of conflict and crises. |

Magida El-Roumy at ESCWA |
Because economic and social development would not be achieved without the human and artistic aspect, ESCWA today received Lebanese renowned diva Majida El-Roumy who got briefed on the the Regional Commission and its work. From ESCWA Headquarters El-Roumy called for giving the youth adequate importance "because they are the future and the crucial means for change." She also invited young generations to consider refined arts as a part of sustainable development. El-Roumy began her visit at with an audience with UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf. |

Introducing Web Scraping in Price Data Collection |
The International Comparison Program (ICP) team at ESCWA has been exploring new ways to improve price statistics in the Arab Region by using technology to implement non-traditional data collection methods. This initiative aims at increasing data collection frequency and quality, while also growing work efficiency by facilitating continuous automated extraction of price data for both CPI and ICP purposes. |

Least developed countries (LDCs) around the world are characterized by low per capita income, poor social and human development and, frequently, disadvantageous geographical locations. Three member States of ESCWA are ranked as LDCs: Mauritania, the Sudan and Yemen. |

On 3 December 2014 and under the theme "Persons with Disabilities in Emergencies: Building Resilience, Protecting Lives," ESCWA, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the UN House, Beirut. |
