High Level Meeting and Regional Seminar on the Implementation of 2008 SNA and Supporting Statistics in the Arab Region |
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and UNSD are cooperating to initiate the formulation of a national strategy and implementation programme for the 2008 SNA and supporting system-wide socio-economic statistics, in collaboration with the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), and the Statistics Department of the league of Arab States (LAS). The main objective of the initiative is strengthening the national statistical system (NSS) for improved policy making with the support of high policy-making in the Arab region. |

The Director of the UNESCWA Sustainable Development and Productivity Division, Ms. Anhar Hegazi today said, “Despite the achievements of Arab countries in answering the basic needs of their populations, including providing housing, infrastructure, and social and service sectors as well as ensuring the continuity of these efforts, the absence of equal rights and the gap in answering the basic needs of various social segments represents a major threat to development results and to achieving sustainability. |

ESCWA Launches Socioeconomic Developments Survey |
A United Nations ESCWA annual survey on the Economic and Social Developments for 2010-2011 was released on 31 January, reflecting the dramatic changes the region has witnessed while moving from the first to the second decade of the 21st century. The survey made observations, provided data to understand and explain the dynamics of regional, sub-regional and country-specific social and economic trends. Its objective is to provide a snapshot of the current socioeconomic situation and an outlook for 2012. |

Held under the title “The Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab States,” the ESCWA 29th Session opened today in Doha, Qatar, at the level of senior delegates, and will open at the ministerial level tomorrow 14 December. The ESCWA Session is held at the Sheraton Grand hotel in Doha until 15 December 2016, when participants will issue a declaration focusing on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab States. |

UN-ESCWA and Italy partner to support empowerment of women refugees from Syria |
3rd August, 2018, Beirut — In a signing ceremony today between the Ambassador of Italy, Massimo Marotti, and the UN Under Secretary General, and ESCWA Executive Secretary, Mohamed Ali Alhakim, a new project was launched that will empower women refugees from Syria and vulnerable women and girls in host communities to play an active role in improving their lives and advocating for their rights. |

Bahrain and UNESCWA to Hold Meeting on Social Policies |
In the run-up to the “National Conference on Social Policies in Bahrain” being organized by the Bahraini Ministry of Social Development and UNESCWA in Manama on 24 and 25 April, Bahraini Social Development Minister Fatima bint Mohamed Al Beloushi hoped the conference would be an opportunity for dialogue and partnership to establish social policies for the Kingdom that are based on scientific planning. She also hoped it would lead to a national consensus on social policies between the Ministry of Social Development and concerned experts from the public and private sectors. |

Sitting in a beauty salon in one of the elite areas in Beirut, I heard the continuous, terrified screams of a young girl. I looked around at the other patrons and could see that they heard it as well. The terrible screaming and desperate pleading continued, and soon everyone sitting there had risen to their feet in concern, asking about the source of these screams. It sounded like the girl was being raped, or horribly abused. She was begging an unknown person to please stop what was being done to her. We all felt very alarmed. |
