Progress Made by the ESCWA Member Countries on Financing for Development |
While 2010 was, for ESCWA member countries, a year of recovery from the effects of the global financial crisis, in 2011 the continued global economic recession and the popular movements in some Arab countries led to a downturn in economic growth rates in most member countries. These challenges and changes have placed added pressure on member countries to implement the commitments set out in the 2002 Monterrey Consensus of the International Conference on Financing for Development and reaffirmed in 2008. |

UN Regional Coordination Mechanism Concludes Beirut Meeting |
Beirut, 12 November 2010 (UN Information Service) — ESCWA Friday concluded its 14th Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) meeting for all UN agencies operating in the Arab region, which was held at the UN House in Beirut 11-12 November. The meeting, which was attended by regional directors and officials of UN agencies and offices, was inaugurated by Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, UN Deputy Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro, ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf, and League of Arab States (LAS) Assistant Secretary-General for Social Affairs Sima Bahous. |

Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights for Agricultural Research and Innovation and its Impact on the Economic Development |
Intellectual property rights (IPRs) and their management are tremendously important aspects of global policy for agricultural research and innovation. For instance, research and innovation in plant breeding are essential to meet sustainable agricultural demands of a growing world population and the changing effects of climate change. Academic institutions and research centres, play an important role in the area of agricultural research to improve crops. These institutions must make efforts to bridge and encourage partnerships between the private and public sectors, in the hope of fostering innovation and improving sustainability while generating revenue and protecting investments.

Beirut, 8 October 2020--The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Ms. Rola Dashti, and the Minister of Labor of Lebanon, Ms. Lamia Yammine, launched today the "لأنّ العلم مفتاح العمل، #لازم_نتعلّم" initiative, which provides certified learning opportunities for 25,000 Lebanese citizens on the e-learning platform Coursera, free-of-charge. |

ESCWA takes part in Beirut Energy Forum and Discusses the Role of Renewable Energy |
ESCWA is organizing a session titled “The Role of Renewable Energy in Socio – Economic Development in the Arab Region” on 17 Sept. 2014, from 15:30 to 17:30, at Le Royal Hotel, Dbayeh within the activities of the 5th Beirut Energy Forum. The session will be moderated by Moncef Ben Abdallah, Senior Energy Expert, former Tunisian Industry and Energy Minister. The session will focus on the impact of Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) deployment and the role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in this respect. |
