Integration Presents Arab World with Unique Opportunities for Human Development, says New ESCWA Report Economic integration is “a requirement for survival” |
On 25 February 2014, UN Undersecretary General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf launched from Tunis a remarkable report entitled “Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative” with the participation of Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, former Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and a crowd of political, economic, intellectual and public figures. Media representatives who took part in the ceremony received a press kit, which we will re-publish over five parts, in view of the importance of the issues the Report addresses. |

In the presence of Jordanian Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Basem Rousan, UN-ESCWA and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) made public today a joint report on "Broadband for Development in the UN-ESCWA Region: Enhancing Access to ICT Services in a Global Knowledge Society" during a press conference at the Jordanian Ministry of Information and Communication Technology in Amman. |

58 Arab Figures Echo ESCWA’s Initiative, Condemn Violence against Women |
By initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on International Women’s Day, 58 Arab figures from various intellectual backgrounds today decried violence against women in an appeal that they signed, cognizant of the challenges faced by women in the process of democratic transition in the Arab region. It was circulated in member countries undergoing political transition (Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen) as well as in the ESCWA host country, Lebanon. Sudan Hosts 11th Session of the ESCWA Committee on Social Development |
Beirut, 13 October 2017 (Communication and Information Unit) – Representatives of concerned ministries in member States of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will gather in Khartoum on 17-18 October 2017 to participate in the 11th Session of the Commission’s Committee on Social Development. The Session will be held in the Corinthia Hotel. Delegates of relevant regional and international organizations will be also participate in the event as observers. |

Leave no one behind; ESCWA and partners discuss combating marginalization in Arab region |
Beirut, 14 May 2019 (ESCWA)--Recent studies show that youth unemployment’s rates in the Arab region are twice as high as the global average and 40% of the Arab population is suffering from multi-dimensional poverty. In this context, a 2-day expert group meeting (EGM) at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut discussed “Leaving No One Behind: Reaching the Most Marginalized in Selected Countries in the Arab Region,” namely Egypt, Lebanon, and Tunisia. |

Socioeconomic Dialogue technical meeting: Integration and Consolidation of the Thematic Priority Areas as identified in the Baseline studies |
Following the last EGM held on 14-15 September 2019 in Tunis; ESCWA’s Libya SED integrated, as agreed, the set of broad arrays of priorities which were identified by the authors of the papers and discussants into thematic areas which encapsulated the harmonization of these priorities in the agenda below. |

Taskforce Meeting: “Final results of the mapping of the energy situation of the building sector in Jordan & periodic survey methodology on energy consumption patterns in the sector” {Postponed} |
The objective of this meeting is to present to the national project task force the final results of the comprehensive baseline mapping study for the energy situation of the building sector in Jordan. Members of the task force, which include representatives of relevant public & private stakeholders for the considered branches of activities, will be solicited to help in validating these final results and identifying areas requiring final revisions. The outputs of this mapping exercise shall constitute the basis for the remaining project activities and will help in defining the main axis and players for conducting the energy efficiency actions in the building sector. |

Arab agriculture and water ministers agree to join hands against impacts of climate change, land degradation and water scarcity |
Beirut-Cairo, 4 April 2019 (ESCWA)--The first joint meeting of Arab ministers of agriculture and water held at the League of Arab States (LAS) today concluded with the adoption of Cairo Declaration that called upon all Arab governments and partners to institutionalize regional coordination mechanisms and harmonize policies across both sectors to face the impacts of climate change, land degradation, and water scarcity. |
