Impact of ICT on Community Development in ESCWA Member Countries |
Measuring the multifaceted information society is a very complex task. In the past, measurement approaches were confined to simply aggregating a variety of data on selected information and communications technology (ICT) indicators, adjusting the weight of some factors, and applying statistical tools. Those approaches, however, lacked theory and validation. While measuring the ever-changing ICT landscape might seem to be enough, this study emphasizes that societies are not exclusively driven by technology. |

Iraqi Minister for Human Rights Wijdan Mikhail said today, “UNESCWA provides major support for her Ministry and the activities it intends to undertake.” She was speaking following her visit this afternoon to the UNESCWA headquarters in Riad el Solh Square, where she met with Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Antoine Mansour, head of UNESCWA’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI). |

European University Students Visit ESCWA |
A group of students visiting Lebanon from various universities in Europe on 6 August called on ESCWA where they were briefed about the UN Regional Commission and welcomed by several of its senior officials. The students' tour began with a stop at ESCWA’s Library, where they received an overview about its books, publications and documents. The European students also had a chance to see ESCWA's reproduction house where most of the Commission’s publications are produced. |

Upon the invitation of the Beirut-based Carnegie Middle East Centre, a group of Arab thinkers discussed on 17 June 2014 the flagship report produced by ESCWA and entitled “Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative” at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel, Beirut. Following an introduction by Senior Associate at the Carnegie Middle East Centre Maha Yahya, the meeting opened with the statements of United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf, and former Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. |

Management Training for the Iraqi Municipalities of Erbil and Basrah |
UNESCWA Iraq Task Force has completed two follow-up management skills training workshops for the benefit of two groups of senior government and municipal officials from Erbil and Basrah. The two training workshops are part of the UN HABITAT project “Strengthening the Urban Sector in Iraq through Building Capacities in Municipal Planning and Management” that is funded by the UNDG Iraq Trust Fund. These two workshops come as follow-up modules to two earlier ones organized by UNESCWA under the same partnership with UN HABITAT in August/September 2005. |

16th Meeting of Industrial Research Centres’ Coordination Committee in Arab States |
ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) hosted the sixteenth meeting of the “Industrial Research Centres’ Coordination Committee in Arab States” simultaneously with ESCWA Technical Committee’s meeting, in cooperation with the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organisation (AIDMO). The meeting aimed to overcome the hurdles facing technology transfer and development, and to raise awareness on the significance of industrial research in order to achieve an advanced Arab industry. |
