UNESCWA to Document Effects of Military Operations on Lebanon |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that the Commission’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI) was documenting the effects of the military operations on Lebanon in order to serve as a practical reference to any future work for rehabilitation and re-construction in the country. Tallawy was speaking this morning to the UN Information Services when she also underlined that the work program was ongoing as planned before the recent crisis has ravaged the country. |

THE EVALUATION FUNCTION The Strategy, Planning, Accountability, Results and Knowledge Section (SPARK) implements the ESCWA Evaluation Policy and reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary, who in turn reports to the Executive Secretary. A report summarizing key evaluations, plans and recommendations for future action is presented to ESCWA’s inter-governmental Ministerial Commission at its biennial session.

Case study on policy reforms to promote renewable energy in Lebanon |
Because of its high dependency on imported fossil fuels, and the lack of adequate electrical generating capacity, the energy situation in Lebanon has been critical over the past decades. This situation has worsened since the beginning of the conflict in Syrian Arab Republic, and the influx of Syrian refugees resulted in a sharp increase of the demand for electricity, therefore widening the gap between generation and demand to approximately 5,524 GWh in 2014. This situation is further challenging the country’s sustainable energy management. |
