The fifteenth anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was marked in a commemorative meeting during the fifty-fourth session of the Committee on Women which took place in New York from 1 to 12 March 2010 and brought together government officials and representatives of civil society, the media and the private sector to assess what was achieved since the Beijing Conference in 1995, share experiences and good practices and discuss priority actions to deal with persistent obstacles and new challenges. |

Sitting in a beauty salon in one of the elite areas in Beirut, I heard the continuous, terrified screams of a young girl. I looked around at the other patrons and could see that they heard it as well. The terrible screaming and desperate pleading continued, and soon everyone sitting there had risen to their feet in concern, asking about the source of these screams. It sounded like the girl was being raped, or horribly abused. She was begging an unknown person to please stop what was being done to her. We all felt very alarmed. |

Within the framework of the “Regional Initiative for Promoting Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in Rural Areas of the Arab Region (REGEND)” project, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership with the General Commission for Regional Development (CGDR) and the National Agency for Energy Conservation (ANME) in Tunisia, is organizing a “capacity-building workshop of rural women on entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector”. |

Integration of Social Justice Principles into Policy-Making |
A crowd of Arab ministers and experts have agreed on the importance of ESCWA continuing to increase its technical support to Member States to implement the social dimension of the 2030 Agenda based on the approaches developed to serve the complementary nature of the Agenda. It was also agreed to implement training workshops for Member States on the use of the handbook prepared by the Secretariat of ESCWA to integrate the principles of social justice into policy-making, including social protection policies. |
