Regional Coordination Mechanism |
The Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) was established pursuant to ECOSOC Resolution 1998/46 to hold "regular interagency meetings in each of the five regions (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America & Caribbean and Western Asia) with a view to improving coordination among the work programmes of the organizations of the United Nations system in each region". The first RCM in the Arab Region was convened by ESCWA in 1999. Since then, meetings have been held annually at the rate of one or two meetings per year. |

ESCWA is an important regional actor in the field of economic and social development. To amplify the impact of its normative and operational work, the organization enters into different types of partnerships and collaborative ventures with a host of global, regional, national and local partners. They include member countries, development agencies, intergovernmental organizations and agencies within and outside the United Nations system, civil society organizations and the private sector. |

Regional UN Meeting Discusses “Arab Spring” |
The pro-democratic uprisings sweeping the region dominated the agenda of the 15th Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) Meeting, which was held 1 June at the UN House in Beirut and brought together regional directors and officials from 22 UN agencies and other international and regional organizations as well as partners in the Arab region. The role of the RCM is to facilitate policy coherence in economic and social development in the region among UN actors and with key regional stakeholders. |

In addition to the statement of Berri, the opening of the Session featured statements by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, delivered on his behalf by ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader AlDafa, who read ESCWA’s statement well. |
