Former SG Special Representative Urges the UN to Put Social Justice at the Heart of Political Debate |
“Is justice a condition for durable peace?” was the question raised today by Tarik Mitri, former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Libya, in front of the heads of more than 20 UN agencies operating in the Arab region, representatives from the League of Arab States (LAS) and various embassies who were hosted at the UN House in Beirut by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) for the 20th Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) meeting to discuss development priority agenda items. |

Environmental Dimension of the 2030 Agenda in the Arab Region |
The Arab region suffers from pressing environmental challenges such as water scarcity, desertification, land degradation and reduction in arable land areas, which negatively impact access to food especially in rural and marginalized areas. Since more than a decade, ESCWA works closely in partnership with the League of Arab States (LAS) and UN Environment on sustainable development issues including provision of adequate tools to monitor and assess the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda. |

Role of middle class as the main drivers of new Arab development model |
Engaging the middle class in reshaping a future is the only sustainable way forward for the Arab region, highlighted the Arab Middle Class Report titled “Arab Middle Class: Measurement and Role in Driving Change”. For decades, the Arab development model has thrust upon generous public services and subsidies in exchange for little or no public policy accountability. However, this “authoritarian bargain” came with an expiration date. It began in the 1990s with the onset of economic structural adjustment programmes. |
