At its six session held in October 2004, the Statistical Commission called on ESCWA to form ‎a regional taskforce to coordinate efforts in relation to the planning of next round of population ‎and housing censuses. Later, the United Nations Statistics Division adopted in March 2005 a ‎resolution on the 2010 World Population and Housing Census Programme, to be ‎implemented from 2005 to 2014. The goal of the Word Programme is three fold: ‎

1. Agree on a set of accepted international principles and recommendations governing the ‎conduct of population and housing censuses; ‎

What:    Under the patronage and the presence of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform in Lebanon May Chidiac, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing a three-day regional workshop on “Open Government and Emerging Technologies in the Arab Region”.
 

Iraqi Minister for Human Rights Wijdan Mikhail said today, “UNESCWA provides major support for her Ministry and the activities it intends to undertake.” She was speaking following her visit this afternoon to the UNESCWA headquarters in Riad el Solh Square, where she met with Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Antoine Mansour, head of UNESCWA’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI).

Despite positive strides in recent decades, social protection policy in the ESCWA region is still short of realizing two important objectives: First, social protection policy should be linked to citizenship rights and integrated into the wider social, economic and political frameworks in which it operates. Second, the success of social protection policies and programmes thrives on transparent, accountable and participatory approaches.
