The full success of the energy transition in the Arab region is largely tied to strengthening the regional cooperation and trade among Arab countries and represents a fruitful avenue to support more sustainable energy systems. The benefits of deploying clean energy systems, smart grids, and green corridors are numerous and crucial to diversify the region’s energy mix while developing grid interconnections between countries towards a pan-Arab electricity market.

On 11 March 2020, WHO announced that Covid-19 outbreak can be characterized as a pandemic. Although the epicenters of the pandemic are currently in the United States and Europe, majority of Arab countries are heavily affected by the virus. In the region, impacts of the Covid-19 crisis are expected to be devastating given prevalent poverty and informality, conflicts and displacement, shrinking oil revenues as well as other factors.

Beirut, 20 April 2018 (Communication and Information Unit)--- On Tuesday, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the United Nations’ regional arm that supports Arab countries in reaching crucial development goals, is welcoming a record number of participants at its headquarters in Beirut for its annual Arab Forum for Sustainable Development (AFSD).
 

ESCWA, in coordination with the International Organization for Migration and the League of Arab States, and in collaboration with member agencies of the Working Group on International Migration in the Arab Region, hosted a two-day capacity building workshop for government officials from Member States on international migration and the Sustainable Development Goals.
