Food Secure Arab World: A Road Map for Policy and Research |
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) organized a conference entitled “Food Secure Arab World: A Road Map for Policy and Research,” in collaboration with the American University of Beirut, the University of Cairo, the Economic Research Forum, the Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine in Rabat, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas. The conference took place on 6 and 7 February 2012, in Beirut. |

ESCWA and the International Renewable Energy Conference |
Investment in alternative energy offers a range of benefits, not only for energy security or environmental considerations but also for the socio-economic gains they can generate. Renewable energy global demand continues to rise, contributing an estimated 19% of global final energy consumption in 2011. Renewables constituted more than 26% of global generating capacity and contributed an estimated 21.7% of global electricity, while creating an estimated 5.7 million jobs for people working directly or indirectly in the renewable energy sector in 2012. |

ESCWA Discusses Financial Crisis, Launches 35th Anniversary |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will hold the 3rd Meeting of its Technical Committee in Beirut on 21 July to discuss the financial crisis, food safety, climate change and some internal issues of the Commission. The meeting's opening at the UN House will also witness the official launching of the 35th Anniversary of ESCWA. |

The acting executive secretary Mr. Atif Kubursi held on Thursday July 19 a meeting with three representatives of Lebanese Chambers of Commerce Industry and Agriculture (LCCIA): Mr. Ghazi Koraytem, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Beirut and Mount Lebanon; Mr. Abdallah Ghandour, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Tripoli and North Lebanon, and Mr. Mohamaad Zaatari, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Sidon and South Lebanon to discuss future potential cooperation. |

Between Now and 2030: A statistical overview of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in the Arab region |
Under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, one decade is left to push development and compile much needed evidence to measure progress, stagnation and setbacks. The present report entitled “Between now and 2030: A statistical overview of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in the Arab region”, provides the Arab region’s progress in each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It highlights where the region now stands from 2030 with a 2000 baseline. |

Regional Workshop on: “Renewable Energy UNDA project conclusions and way forward” |
The objective of this regional workshop is to conclude the UNDA project on “Promoting Renewable Energy Investments for Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Development” by providing closing remarks about the implemented activities, an update on the RE projects portfolios from selected UN ESCWA and UNECE Member countries, and indications about the way forward to continue promoting RE investments in the two regions, using available instruments, and particularly, the “Sustainable Energy Marketplace” platform (http://marketplace.irena.org/) developed by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as one of the main tools that facilitate Access to renewable energy projects in developing countries and identify potential funding sources. Moreover, support was provided by the UNDA project to enhance this platform that will be presented and discussed during the workshop. |

Launching of E-Caravan Project for South Lebanon |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy considered the mobile computer school project a join effort between the United Nations agencies in Lebanon, foreign and Arab embassies, civil society organizations, and the banking and private sectors. Tallawy was speaking at a press conference held today to launch the E-Caravan project for South Lebanon implemented by UNESCWA in cooperation with “Fondation Saradar”. The launching took place under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Communication Marwan Hamadeh represented by the ministry’s Director-General Naji Andraos. |

Social Expenditure Monitor: ESCWA tool to improve budgeting towards increased social justice |
