Regional Commission and UN-Women Join Hands to Discuss Regional Accountability Tool for Achieving Gender Equality in National Institutions |
Government representatives and officials from the National Women Machineries (NWMs) in the Member States of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) today adopted a unified Arab framework to measure accountability and progress towards achieving gender equality in public institutions. The framework will be tested later at the levels of both the NWMs and governmental institutions. |

Follow-up on recommendations of Civil Society Forum on "Arab Uprising and Prospects for Renaissance" |
ESCWA is holding an inter-divisional Expert Group Meeting to Follow-up on the Civil Society Forum held in Cairo in April 2011 on the “Arab Uprisings and Prospects for Renaissance”, in the UN house (MZ floor) on 25 and 26 August 2011. The EGM aims to further examine experiences, draw lessons, identify problems, and discuss the requirements needed to ensure smooth transition and progress towards modernization and democratization of Arab societies. |

On 11 March 2020, WHO announced that Covid-19 outbreak can be characterized as a pandemic. Although the epicenters of the pandemic are currently in the United States and Europe, majority of Arab countries are heavily affected by the virus. In the region, impacts of the Covid-19 crisis are expected to be devastating given prevalent poverty and informality, conflicts and displacement, shrinking oil revenues as well as other factors. |

Mr. Al-Dafa has recently served as Ambassador of Qatar to the United States and Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States (OAS. In this capacity,he played a special role in promoting access to education and the arts in the Arab-American community and among other minority populations in the United States. |

New portal to assist small and medium enterprises in the Arab region |
Beirut, 04 September 2019 (ESCWA)-- Arab experts and government officials gathered at the UN House in Beirut today to discuss a web-based platform that ESCWA is designing to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), given their significant role in economic growth. The consultative meeting identified the key functionalities and content of the platform, dubbed SMEs Digital Enablers Portal. |

Kuwait Hosts First Annual Arab Internet Governance Forum |
Under the joint patronage of the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the First Annual Arab Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will be hosted by the Kuwait Information Technology Society (KITS) on 9-11 October 2012, at the Regency Kuwait Hotel. The meeting will be held in collaboration with the Arab IGF Secretariat represented by the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt, and is sponsored by a number of institutions, including Zain, Réseaux IP Européens (RIPE), ICANN and APTLD. |

An Introductory Study on the Status, Challenges and Prospects of the Libyan Society |
This paper presents a critical sociological and historical analysis of the Libyan crisis and its impact on Libyan society after 2011. In addition, it reviews and focuses on local strategies for survival and resistance. Four major arguments are made in the analysis of the Libyan crisis. First, that the persistent violence does not stem from cultural concepts such as fragmentation and tribalism but, rather, has been manufactured by the failed leadership and outside intervention. |
