Promoting the ICT Sector to Meet the Challenges of the Knowledge Economy |
In many countries worldwide, the economy is experiencing rapid developments in a shift from production-based economy to information and knowledge based economy. In the Arab region, the ICT sector has grown rapidly over the past few years. e-services improved, and the use of this technology increased in economic and social sectors. The remarkable prosperity of the sector was accompanied by an overall economic growth in Arab countries at a better pace than previous years. |

Water Resources Issues in the ESCWA Region: Country Fact Sheets |
The purpose of these Country Fact Sheets is to examine the water situation in the region, with particular emphasis on the desalination industry as a growing source of freshwater in many of the ESCWA countries. The Fact Sheets examine the trend in population growth, freshwater availability, and water use, highlighting the consumption trends of the most waterintensive sectors in each country. The desalination of each country is presented in terms of quantity produced, type of technology and type of feedwater used, and provides the predicted future desalination volume. |

UN Deputy Secretary General Concludes Visit to Lebanon, Praises Lebanese National Dialogue and Support to Syrian Refugees |
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson concluded this morning a four-day visit to Lebanon where he participated in the 17th meeting of the UN Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) hosted by ESCWA on 10 December 2012 at the UN House, Riad El-Solh Square, Beirut. During his visit, Eliasson met with senior officials and political figures in the country, and made a field visit to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and its area of operations, as well as to two local centres hosting Syrian refugees. |
