UN Celebrates World Environment Day |
Investing an additional USD 40 billion a year in the forestry sector could halve deforestation rates by 2030, increase tree planting by around 140 percent by 2050, and catalyze the creation of millions of new jobs. Those were among main findings of a report on forests produced by the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and launched today by the UN Communications Group in a press conference in Beirut on the occasion of World Environment Day 2011 (WED). |

Review recurrent and non-recurrent publications on regional integration and trade reforms |
The Expert Group Meeting is organized by ESCWA in cooperation with UNCTAD. The participants included high-level economists and experts from Arab universities and think tanks and representatives of Arab regional and sub-regional organizations such as the League of Arab States and the Arab Maghreb Union. The meeting aimed to critically review the drafts of the recurrent publication on the third edition of assessing Arab economic integration and the non-recurrent publication on trade costs in the Arab region. The meeting discussed also the findings of the World Investment Report 2019 prepared by UNCTAD. |

Promoting the ICT Sector to Meet the Challenges of the Knowledge Economy |
In many countries worldwide, the economy is experiencing rapid developments in a shift from production-based economy to information and knowledge based economy. In the Arab region, the ICT sector has grown rapidly over the past few years. e-services improved, and the use of this technology increased in economic and social sectors. The remarkable prosperity of the sector was accompanied by an overall economic growth in Arab countries at a better pace than previous years. |

Two-Decade ESCWA-BGR Project Concludes |
After 21 years of cooperation, ESCWA and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) marked the official end of their mutual project on the management of water resources in the ESCWA region, on 8 July 2013. The project team met one last time in the presence of the representative of the Embassy of Germany in Beirut Hanan Abu-Rida, and staff from different ESCWA divisions. BGR is the central scientific authority providing advice to the Federal Government of Germany and to the private sector in all geo-related issues. |

ESCWA Launches 2011 Report on Information Society in Western Asia |
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on 4 May said that countries with a low Gross National Income (GNI) spend on the information and communication services more than the developed ones, and that the Arab region comes in the second rank in terms of the cost of these services. |
