This technical meeting seeks to bring together a small group of professionals to discuss conceptual and technical issues associated with the assessment of vital registration processes and data for Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon. The purpose of this meeting is to identify conceptual/definitional issues and measurement challenges associated with vital registration assessment of the Syrian refugee population in Jordan and Lebanon, and to develop a modest plan for initial pilot testing of different large-scale data collection approaches.

ESCWA wrapped-up the twefth session of its Transport Committee with recommendations that highlighted road safety, an issue member countries were called to consider a priority, implementing by such the eponym UN Decade of Action launched last week.

The committee had convened at the UN House in Beirut, on 17-19 May. A slew of officials gathered for the event, including representatives from ESCWA’s 14 member countries, and regional as well as international organizations.

Background
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) is
implementing a project on "Enhancing Capacities to Eradicate Violence Against Women
Through Networking of Local Knowledge Communities". In implementing this project ESCWA
will cooperate with all other United Nations Regional Commissions, the United Nations
Statistical Division (UNSD) and the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women
(UNDAW).

On 5 May 2016, experts from across the Islamic world gathered at the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) in Amman, Jordan, to participate in the International Seminar on Islam and Science. Under the theme “Islamic Perspectives on Science’s Big Questions” the Seminar discussed a variety of topics, including Islam and Modern Science; Cosmology and Evolution; and Islam- Science Relationship: The Way Forward.
