The Demographic Profile of Arab Countries: Ageing of Rural Populations |
This document highlights the course of fertility and mortality transition, and examines in rural and urban populations in the 22 countries of the Arab region for the period 1980 – 2050. Additionally, it exposes age-structural changes and ageing of rural populations for the period 1980 – 2015 in eight selected countries, namely, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Syrian Arab Republic, Somalia and Yemen. |

Assessment of Water Quality Management Practices in the ESCWA Region |
This study assesses water quality management practices in selected countries within the region and presents member countries with recommendations on the protection and sustainable use of scarce water resources. It examines the extent to which measures related to water quality management have been integrated into national strategies and/or integrated water quality management plans, and discusses the progress achieved towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals in terms of improving sanitation services. |

World Day to Combat Desertification |
The World Day to Combat Desertification is observed worldwide on 17 June every year. The focus in 2015 was the attainment of food security for all through sustainable food systems. This theme brought together two sustainable development goals, namely to end hunger and achieve food security (goal 2) and to protect terrestrial ecosystems (goal 15), which are very relevant for the Arab region; a dryland region facing mounting challenges, including food insecurity and the degradation of the natural resource base, notably soils. |

Transnational Corporations in ESCWA Member Countries with the United Arab Emirates and Egypt as Case Studies |
In addition to enhancing the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into a country, transnational corporations (TNCs) play a significant role in the transfer of technology from developed to developing countries. This study analyses the activities of TNCs in ESCWA member countries with reference to the United Arab Emirates and Egypt as case studies. A study of these two countries, which are host to the highest number of TNCs among ESCWA member States, can assist other ESCWA member countries in adopting sound measures aimed at attracting TNCs and, consequently, FDI. |
