This study was carried out at the request of ESCWA member countries through the Committee on Transport of the Commission. It reviews the ways in which the region is responding to the liberalization and commercialization of air transport and makes a number of recommendations to regional Governments regarding regional cooperation, the establishment of a fair and open air transport market, the coordination of air traffic control, the use of information and communications technology, environmental protection and the removal of procedural barriers to trade and transport.

During 2010-2011, the ESCWA has focused its work on emphasizing to member countries the importance of planning national policies for youth under the framework of the World Programme of Action for Youth. This booklet sheds the light on the youth statistical profiles and national strategies in each member country and shows success stories achieved in member countries in the area of launching and implementing national programmes and projects for youth development and empowerment.

The policy brief introduces the concept of ‘transitional justice’ and its key mechanisms that may influence post-conflict reconstruction or political transition. It argues that gendered concerns should be incorporated into transitional justice and reconstruction endeavours in the same manner as women’s involvement. Moreover, it calls on national women’s machineries in the Arab region to play a proactive role in ensuring that the interests of women and girls are reflected in post-conflict and transitional justice mechanisms, and that such processes are gender responsive.
