Bulletin on Population and Vital Statistics in the ESCWA Region, No. 14 |
The Bulletin on Population and Vital Statistics in the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Region disseminates available data and statistics on ESCWA countries vital events (births, deaths, marriage and divorce). Data in this bulletin were compiled from national sources and a questionnaire prepared by ESCWA. The purpose of the Bulletin is to encourage countries to produce and disseminate vital statistics needed for better planning and to strengthen countries civil registration systems. |

The global community was proud to announce in 2012 that the global drinking water target articulated in the Millennium Development Goals had been met five years ahead of schedule. However, the countries of the water-scarce Arab region still face the continuing challenge of providing safe and sufficient water, and improved sanitation to its growing population. |

Identifying the Legislative Gaps that Need to Be Filled for the Application of Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security in Selected Arab States |
This regional study examines the legislative and policy requirements for the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 in seven Arab states, namely Tunisia, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen. The study concluded that most of these states have indeed established the needed institutions for the advancement of women and human rights broadly speaking. The study also proposes a range of recommendations on the responsibility of states in the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325. |

The Impact of Economic Variables on the Social Dimension of Development: Education and Health |
Investment in human capital is crucial for poverty reduction and has a positive impact on economic growth and human development. This study analyses the impact of public policy on human development as measured in terms of public spending on education and health in 11 ESCWA countries during the period 1975-2002. It compares achievements in human development across these countries by testing the statistical relationship between the indicators of human development in these countries and their per capita GDP, and through cross-section time-series panel data model. |

This issue disseminates population census data and comparable national data on registered vital events in the ESCWA region, with complementary analysis. To optimize accuracy, data have been checked for consistency against national, regional and international sources and for comparability purposes, rates have been computed using the World Population Prospects: The 2006 Revision prepared by the United Nations Population Division. |

In the context of modernization and speeding up economic and social changes, the transition from stable traditional societies to a dynamic modern environment requires adaptation, which translates into sound social policies. This study promotes a coordinated and effective social vision that encompasses social and economic priorities of countries in the ESCWA region through a comparison between developed countries, namely, Canada and Norway, and countries at different stages of development, namely, Malaysia, Republic of Korea and Tunisia. |

The Environment in the Transboundary Context in the ESCWA Region: Situation and Recommendations |
Most ESCWA member countries have ratified international environmental agreements and have committed themselves to enhancing relevant governance structures, developing action plans and submitting reports on the state of the environment. The resulting sectoral approaches and fragmented policies have failed to define or address adequately the challenges that are specifically transboundary in nature. This study attempts to identify and tackle the major transboundary environmental threats in the ESCWA region. |
